If you need a new shed or building, the lead time can be a significant factor in your chosen supplier. Delays can be frustrating, especially if you're on a deadline. The last thing you want is to plan a build, only to realise your shed won’t be there when you need it. At ABC Sheds, we’ve helped thousands of customers across Australia get the right shed at the right time. We understand the common causes of delays and the fastest ways to speed up delivery. In this article, we explain our shed delivery timeframes and which factors may cause timeline delays. We also share how our delivery process works so you know what to expect at every step. What could impact the delivery time? Based on a typical shed project, our standard delivery timeframe is 12 weeks. However, various factors can extend this timeline, such as location, design complexity, shed size, customisations, and even council consent. We’ve broken these down to help set realistic expectations. Location If your property is in a remote or hard-to-reach area, expect longer delivery times. Our sheds are shipped from Young, NSW, so transport to locations like Western Australia or far-north Queensland may take extra time. One of our most memorable shed projects saw a shed delivery to Fitzroy Crossing, WA, 4,600 km away from our factory. It required over 50 hours of driving over multiple days to arrive. Also, if the delivery route is challenging, the delivery process may require more extensive planning. To avoid transport delays, ensure your delivery site is accessible by clearing any narrow driveways and low-hanging branches. Shed size Larger sheds generally require more time for manufacturing, preparation, and transportation. If your delivery is oversized, it may even need a dedicated truck or special permits, which can add delays. Customisations If you require design customisations and unique features, we will spend more time in the design and proposal stage. Customisations may include windows, doors, skylights, awnings, ventilation, different bay sizes, and more. If you don’t need a complex design, a pre-designed kitset shed from our Durakit range is a great time saver. These shed kits are already in stock and are ready to be delivered in under 4 weeks! Council Consent Council consent varies widely but can take anything between 4 and 12 weeks, or more, depending on the council. This is usually influenced by the shed size, zoning regulations, and the complexity of your design but may also be caused by hold-ups with engineering approvals, environmental assessments, and public notifications. To find out how long council consent will take for your project, contact your local council: New South Wales Victoria Queensland Western Australia South Australia Tasmania Northern Territory Australian Capital Territory We can also provide a preliminary design of your shed and a no-obligation quote to make sure it is an accurate estimate. Durakit sheds — Faster lead times If you prefer a faster lead time and cost-effective option, our Durakit structural steel sheds are pre-designed and approved. Compared to a custom shed, this is more efficient and predictable, with fixed pricing and delivery anywhere in Australia! When we receive your order, we will prepare the shed components and deliver the kit within 2 to 4 weeks. We always have at least one of each kit in stock, meaning we can start your shed straight away. As soon as the kit is ready, we’ll deliver it to your site. Our lead times and delivery process for custom sheds Ordering a custom shed means getting a structure tailored to your exact needs, but this also means a longer lead time than pre-designed options. Below is a step-by-step breakdown of how long each stage typically takes and what you can do to keep things moving smoothly. Step 1: Design, approval and order confirmation The first step is finalising your shed design and getting the necessary approvals. This stage includes selecting your shed size, layout, and custom features, engineering and structural assessments and council approval (if required). If council consent is needed, this can take 4-12 weeks or more, depending on local regulations. We recommend starting this process as early as possible to avoid unnecessary delays. Step 2: Site preparation Before your shed can be delivered, you need to prepare the site. This includes levelling the building site, laying drainage, and connecting any necessary utilities. If required, this is also the time to pour the concrete pad, approximately 6 metres wider and longer than the shed dimensions. The estimated time for site preparation is 1-2 weeks (depending on site conditions and concrete curing time). Step 3: Manufacturing Once your order is confirmed, we begin manufacturing your custom shed and preparing all additional materials that will complete your custom design. During this process, we also complete various quality checks and ensure everything is included. Our lead time is approximately 12 to 16 weeks, from the order confirmation until the shed is loaded and ready to go. Step 3: Transport and delivery When the necessary manufacturing is complete, our team compiles all the components onto the delivery truck. Once packed, your shed will be delivered from our factory in Young to your building site. Tracking details are provided so you can monitor delivery progress. Step 4: Installation and construction Once your shed arrives, it’s time to assemble and install it. You can start erecting the shed with our instructional DVD and installation manual - it’s easy and intuitive. Or, we can engage experienced contractors in your area. On average, this stage takes between 1-2 weeks, however this is dependent on size, site, and weather conditions. How long will it take in total? Here’s a timeline summary of a custom shed from design to completion: Stage Estimated time Design & approval 1-2 weeks (without council consent) or 4-12 weeks (with council consent), or more (depending on the council) Site preparation 1-2 weeks Manufacturing 12-16 weeks Transport & delivery 5-14 days Installation 1-2 weeks (dependent on size, site, and weather conditions) To speed up the process and reduce delays: Start council approvals early if required Choose standard design elements to reduce manufacturing time Ensure your site is prepped before delivery Confirm easy access for delivery trucks The best shed for you At ABC Sheds, we design, manufacture, and supply structural steel sheds for a wide range of purposes: Farm sheds Grain sheds, hay sheds, or cotton sheds Fertiliser sheds Aircraft hangars Dressage arenas and Horse stables Commercial buildings or industrial sheds School COLA shelters, and more.
