Do I need council approval for a large shed?

Yes. In most Australian states large sheds fall outside the “exempt” size limits, so you will usually need either a building permit or development approval before construction begins.

Typical trigger points include:

Floor area over 10 m² in Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland, or over 15 m² in South Australia and 18 m² in Tasmania
Overall height above 3 m, or above 2.4 m when the shed sits within the boundary setback
Location forward of the front building line or too close to neighbouring boundaries.
