Westbury Pastoral Co operates from their property on Fraters Speedway in Young, where Grant Robinson knows that proper fertiliser storage can make or break a farming operation. With fertiliser prices what they are these days, losing product to moisture damage simply isn't an option.
ABC Sheds designed and constructed a purpose-built fertiliser shed featuring concrete bunker walls and weather-tight construction that keeps expensive agricultural inputs in perfect condition while making daily farm operations much easier.
Moisture and fertiliser don't mix well. One leak or unsealed gap during the wet season can turn thousands of dollars worth of product into unusable clumps that won't spread properly through machinery.
Grant needed a storage solution that would keep his fertilisers completely dry year-round while still allowing easy access with tractors and loaders. The structure had to handle the weight and sometimes corrosive nature of different fertiliser types, and it needed to work efficiently during busy planting and spreading seasons.
In addition, Grant had a non-negotiable deadline due to the upcoming harvest. We successfully met this deadline by coordinating multiple contractors and working collaboratively to ensure everything came together swiftly and on time for him.
ABC Sheds delivered a substantial 48m x 24m fertiliser shed with a generous 8m eave height, giving plenty of headroom for machinery operations. The 20° gable roof design sheds water efficiently while maximising storage space underneath.
The shed is built tough with 410 UB hot-dipped galvanised columns and 1000mm hot-dip galvanised open web joist trusses across eight 6-metre bays. This gives excellent strength while allowing flexible storage arrangements inside.
The real standout feature is the 3-metre-high concrete bunker walls along two long sides and one end. These bunker walls contain bulk materials perfectly while the wall sheeting finishes 200mm below the top, creating an effective containment system that works brilliantly for fertiliser storage.
We used Zincalume .42 BMT sheeting throughout, which handles the agricultural environment without issues. The high-capacity 600HF gutters with rain heads and 150mm downpipes on each corner deal with heavy rainfall efficiently.
Looking ahead, we included gable infill on one end with mounting points for future door tracks. This gives Grant the option to add roller doors down the track when his operation grows.
✓ 8 bays at 6 metres each
✓ 3-metre-high concrete bunker walls on three sides
✓ Zincalume roof and wall sheeting
✓ 20° gable roof pitch for efficient water runoff
✓ High-capacity 600HF gutters with rain heads
✓ 150mm downpipes on each corner
✓ Gable infill prepared for future door installation
“I came across ABC Sheds on social media and by seeing sheds in my area. Having a grain/fertiliser shed has helped us with harvest logistics by keeping the headers rolling with somewhere to quickly and efficiently unload trucks. For fertiliser, we are able to keep larger tonnages on hand ready to use when required, particularly useful for spreading urea in front of rain events. We have also removed the need to store fertiliser in silos.
ABC Sheds were very good to deal with. They achieved their stated completion time, which was very important to us as the shed was put into use at harvest the same day it was completed. I would have no problem recommending ABC Sheds.”
