The Solution
ABC Sheds built a 78m x 24m COLA with a 7m eave height and hot-dip galvanised open web joists spanning 13 bays of 6 metres each.
The roof was constructed alongside the courts and then lifted into place by five cranes — a process “quite extraordinary to witness” according to Ben Head, Business Manager at Heights College. This method allowed the school to complete the court installation first while still ensuring the structural precision and safety of the massive roof.
The roof was designed to withstand Queensland’s harsh climate, with materials that reflect heat and resist weather damage. Partial wall skirts provide shade and protection from driving rain while still allowing plenty of airflow to keep the space open and comfortable.
The clear-span design ensures there are no obstructive braces at student level, making the area safer and easier for teachers to supervise. Finally, an efficient guttering system handles heavy tropical downpours, keeping the learning area dry and usable year-round.
