Located in Canungra, Queensland, our client had been wanting an aircraft hangar for a long time. He needed a safe and secure place to store his new plane, safe and dry out of the harsh Australian weather. We love how this building turned out, balancing budget, functionality, and longevity.
One of the main challenges with this project was maximising accessibility for aircraft while keeping costs down. Following a combination of floods and harsh drought conditions, our client wanted to stick to the budget while still maximising return on investment.
To maximise accessibility, we amended the hangar design with a treble door track instead of a double track. When the sliding doors are opened, this creates a 20-metre opening with no centre pole in the way. These doors can also open to either side, creating an opening of 15 metres.
Inside the hangar, the clearspan structure maximises usable space without the need for internal columns. The structural steel trusses provide plenty of support for the roof, making it easy to store and manoeuvre multiple aircraft.
Additional features include a series of translucent roof panels to maximise natural light and a guttering system to divert rainwater. This hangar is currently being used by OZ Paragliding and hang gliding.
